National Liberation and Culture-Amilcar Cabral

"Culture...is thus an essential element in the history of a people." (Cabral, page 13)

I thought this quote was very interesting, especially in the context of our studies of the African colonies of Portugal. Without culture, we would know very little about places such as Cabo Verde and Guinea Bissau. These places, if the Portuguese would have had their way, would not have had any history to them. They would not have had any culture of their own. But would be, as the Portuguese dictator Salazar saw them, simply extensions of Portugal and of Europe. However, thanks to their culture (their music, dancing, writing etc.) we know of their history and that they were and are indeed countries of their own with their own personality, culture, and in turn, history. 

Some Funny Kind of Porto Rican

"Now they call Fox Point the Lower East Side, and I told them this is not the Lower East Side this is Fox Point. I've been born and raised in Fox Point, ya know? They call it the lower east side!"

I found this quote to be very telling of the lives of the Cape Verdians in Rhode Island. It is said to think that the residents there could overtake the lives that they knew and loved. They turned Fox Point into something completely different than what it was, and forced most of the Cape Verdians to go to different parts of the city. It seems as though Americans have always done similar things throughout history, starting from the very beginning when we would kick out the Native Americans who were already here when we arrived. This seems to be a problem throughout the world, that just because people aren't wealthy they don't deserve to be treated like normal human beings.

Mujer Bonita

"Mulher bonita, traz alegria

Que cresce quando é dado seu amor"

O poema “Mujer Bonita", escrito por Eugénio Tavares, é um poema muito interessante. Vou concentrar nas duas primeiras linhas que citei. Eu acho muito verdadeiro que uma mulher pode trazer alegria para uma vida. E essa alegria com certeza aumenta quando começa a amar a mulher. A alegria de ser enfatuado com uma mulher é bom, mas ter amor verdadeiro com uma pessoa traz uma alegria que nem da para explicar. 

A vida, eu acho, é assim. As coisas boas podem vir rapidamente, até vão vir só em ver alguém ou alguma coisa. Más a verdadeira felicidade vem depois de trabalhar por algo. O amor certamente é algo que tem que trabalhar para conseguir. Tenho visto em minha vida! 

The Negro and Language

“The colonized is elevated above his jungle status in proportion to his adoption of the mother country’s cultural standards. He becomes whiter as he renounces his blackness, his jungle." (Fanon, 419). 

O autor fala a respeito de uma pessoa tornar mais branca ao aprender a nova cultura e idioma do país colonizador. Ele não está falando literalmente de uma pessoa tornar mais branca, mais dá isso como analogia de tornar-se uma pessoa melhor. A analogia de tornar-se mais branco refere-se especificamente a tornar mais intelligente, educado, e poderoso. Então, o autor não está falando somente de aprender a nova língua do país colonizador, más também da nova cultura. Eu acho isso muito triste que essas pessoas tiveram que abondonar sua cultura e as coisas que elas conheciam só para chegar-se num nivel avançado da vida. Infelizmente, isso é a realidade de muitos lugares no mundo hoje, tem sido a verdade por séculos. Seria bom se um dia o mundo pudesse aceitar qualquer pessoa independente da situação ou cor da pele.
